Battle of the BB Creams (Collective Product Review)

Ever since I learned about BB Creams, I have been in the constant hunt for the best one. Needless to say, I have tried a bunch and had a love-hate relationship with some of them. I used to wear foundation and concealer to hide my blemishes but found the combo to be too cakey on my face after a few hours. But when I tried my very first BB Cream, I was in awe. I was addicted. It became my Holy Grail makeup/skincare product.

L-R: Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals BB Cream (asian formulation), The Face Shop Lovely Me:ex, Etude House Precious Minerals BB Cream, Tony Moly Expert 3D Collagen BB Cream, Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream

The Face Shop Lovely Me:ex

To be honest, the only reason I purchased this BB cream is because it was cheap. I bought it for only 350Php (approx. $8). The moment I tried it on my neck inside the store, I thought it will do a decent job; it matches my skin tone perfectly. Unfortunately, this BB cream is not for me. It hardly has any coverage in it and acts more like a tinted moisturizer than a BB cream. I have a ton of acne scarring because of severe acne I recently experienced and this BB cream did nothing to cover the scars. To make the long story short, this is not a good BB cream for people who needs coverage like I do.

Pros:
  • Inexpensive for 50ml BB cream
  • Matches skin tones well
  • Comes in two shades
Cons:
  • does not have coverage
  • you need a lot of product to cover imperfections

Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals BB Cream (Asian formulation)

This is the very first BB cream that I have ever used. This is also the product that made me lust for BB creams even more. I have heard a lot of bad reviews for the Maybelline BB cream western formulation but this Asian version is definitely a great product. It does not cover imperfections well but can provide a decent amount of coverage. Also, it makes your face look brighter, glowing, and hydrated. I swear by this BB cream on days when I don't need a lot of coverage and I want a lightweight formula on my face.

Pros:
  • Inexpensive (only 299php last time I bought which is approx. $7)
  • light-medium coverage
  • makes your face look glowing and overall healthy
Cons:
  • a bit light for my skin tone
  • comes in only one shade
  • does not provide heavy coverage

The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream

This is probably the worst BB cream I have ever tried. It does nothing on my skin but make it ghastly white. I don't recommend this BB cream at all. It was only given to me as a gift and unfortunately, I didn't like it.

Pros:
  • Nothing! I swear, I cannot find an aspect of this BB cream that I liked.
Cons:
  • makes your face too white
  • does not have coverage

This BB cream on the other hand has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I bought this from a friend before I knew Missha had a store in SM North. The only problem I have with this though is that my friend gave me the wrong shade. I should be shade no.23 because I am highly acidic (the right shade for acidic people, according to the SA). I am still saving up for a bottle and get the right shade because this is quite expensive. But for what its worth, this is the best BB cream I have ever used.

Pros:
  • full coverage
  • makes your face look brighter
  • has a high SPF to ward off UVA and UVB rays
  • a very small amount is all you need for complete coverage
  • comes in a variety of shades
Cons
  • super expensive (1600php or approx. $40)

Everyone has been raving about this BB cream which made me succumb to the hype. I consider this the cheaper alternative to the Missha BB cream. This is definitely cheaper and does a good job. It has medium-full coverage and makes your skin look brighter and dewy - similar to the Maybelline effect. The only downside: I find that it becomes a bit dark for my skin tone after a few hours of wearing. But so far, this is the closest to my skin tone and delivers a good job.

Pros:
  • brighter and dewy effect
  • smells good
  • closer to most skin tones
  • not too expensive (728php approx. $17)
  • comes in a variety of shades
Cons
  • becomes too dark on my skin after a few hours
  • the pump squirts the BB cream all over the place (messy pump)

This is my most recent BB cream acquisition and I have been using this for about a week now. Honestly, the only reason I got this is because I wanted to try Tony Moly BB creams. This is what the SA suggested to me but is not really designed for acne prone skin (prolly because I asked for the best BB cream from the brand). Even if this is not designed for acne-prone skin, I must say that I am deeply in-love with this BB cream. Next to Missha, I think this is the second best. It provides medium-full coverage and has a matte finish that I really like (perfect for people with oily skin).

Pros:
  • Not too expensive (978php approx. $23)
  • Provides decent coverage
  • Matte finish
  • Very little amount is needed to hide acne scarring
  • Has high SPF
Cons
  • It has a metallic smell that can be bothersome (me thinks this is because of the golden peptides it contains)
If I had to choose 1 among all of these, I would go for Missha if I had the budget. Otherwise, I would settle for either Etude House of Tony Moly.

Disclaimer: sorry for this badly written post. I am encountering writer's block lately and I can't seem to grasp words and construct better sentences. But I hope many of you found this collective product review helpful, nonetheless. Enjoy the rest of the weekend! :)

  4. what a comprehensive review! I have used maybe three of the products you have reviewed here and i guess the trick with bb creams is to find the one that really complements the kind and color of skin.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

    1. I agree! Sadly though, most BB creams come in only one shade. This is why I am an advocate of Missha for BB creams because they have a wide range of shades that will match most skin tones.

  5. I'm using Tony Moly's Honey Bee BB Cream.I love it!

I've been hearing good reviews for Maybelline's BB Cream. I might try that one day! Sad that it only has one shade. Will check it out soon.

    1. I was contemplating on getting the Honey Bee or this 3D one but I ended up going for this one because of the Collagen aspect (I am scared to have wrinkles, haha!). You should definitely try Maybelline! They are super affordable but works really well!

  23. Ive been looking for bb cream review that has been made by a filipina! Best review ever! And those are the exact bb creams i wanted to be compared. Thank u so much.

Anyway..just would like to share. I started with maybelline and i was really satisfied by it although a lot were telling me that it was too oily for their skin.. however it wasnt on mine.. maybe because i work on an fully airconditioned office.
Then i heard bb were from korea so i wanted to try a korean product and bought tony moly dream me bb. It has full coverage for me but it was too thick and it was whiter for my complexion.
Then i tried face shop lovely me. Light coverage and i got pimples though it has a nice sent. Now, im searching for other products.
I want to tey misshas but we dont have one in davao city i guess.
Maybe ill go for that etude however im afraid that my face would look darker later on.
    Still confused though

    1. I am not really fond of The Face Shop BB cream as well because I don't think the formulation is suited for acne-prone skin. Etude House has a range of BB creams. It could be that the one I bought darkens the complexion while other variants won't (I haven't tried the others yet). You can get Missha online. I believe they allow orders through their Facebook fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/misshaph?ref=ts&fref=ts If you are confused, I would really suggest Missha because their BB cream comes in various shades so there is definitely one that will match your skin tone perfectly. It has great coverage, too, and a high SPF. :)

    2. I have heard lots of good things about Skin79 but I haven't tried any of their BB creams yet. Last time I was in Seoul there was only one store in Myeongdong and it was very difficult to find. And when I checked the price of their BB creams, kinda expensive and I didn't have enough money anymore. I'll maybe look for one online then do a review. :)

    1. Honestly, hindi ako sure. But from experience I think choosing one that is a shade lighter than your skin tone is advised kase as the day goes on nag o-oxidize ang BB cream kaya nagiging darker for acidic people. Kaya para pumantay sa kulay, one shade lighter gamitin mo para pag nag oxidize na siya ang darker shade niya is yung skin tone mo na. :) Pero hands down Missha talaga the best BB cream I've tried. Even Japanese BB creams are incomparable. :)
