New Year's Resolutions: Keep your Resolutions

Happy New Year to all of us!

Whenever I hear the word "New Year" there is only one thing that comes into my mind: New Year's Resolutions. I find it quite interesting that each year we are given the chance to start anew, become better people, and live the life according to how we want it to be. But the problem with New Year's Resolutions is they are quite difficult to maintain. We usually start really well but after a few months, we go back to our old habits, to our old mindset, and eventually fail to achieve our goals. It can be frustrating, I know; starting a good year and ending it miserably. As much as possible, we would all want to keep up with our resolutions and end the year as great as how we started it. Therefore, how do you keep track of your resolutions and reach your goals for the year?
1.) DON'T MAKE RESOLUTIONS YOU CAN'T KEEP
This is one of the most common mistakes people do. I think the key here is to make resolutions that are attainable and doable for you. If you know you can't maintain that resolution throughout the year, don't start it in the first place. One of the most common resolutions people make is exercising and working out on a regular basis. They start the year going to the gym twice or thrice a week but after a few months they hardly go to the gym anymore. Why? Either they are bored, don't have the time, or they are just simply not interested anymore. This will just result in wasting money because of membership fee and wasting effort because you can never maintain it. If you know you can't maintain going to the gym, exercise and workout at your own pace. Remember that exercising should be fun and not forceful in any way. This way you can keep this resolution and be glad that you did.

2.) SET SPECIFIC GOALS
Setting goals is an important factor for keeping a resolution. Simply stating that you want to become fitter and healthier this year is useless because a.) it is intangible; and, 2.) it is ambiguous. You need a specific goal to help you achieve your resolutions. If you want to become fitter and healthier this year set a SPECIFIC amount. For example, "I want to lose 5 pounds each week." Setting a specific goal will give you better motivation and inspiration to continue with your resolution.
3.) FOCUS
Focus is what will help you continue with your resolutions and help you achieve your goals for the year. But I find that this is probably one of the hardest things to do as well. Keeping your mind focused can be quite difficult especially if there are so many distractions everywhere. If you want to save more money this year, it can be hard to achieve especially with the constant sales and new trends coming out each season that you just want to spend all your money shopping (I am guilty of this one). So, how do you keep focused? In my case, telling people my resolutions and goals help me become more focused. These people constantly remind me of the goals and resolutions I have set for myself therefore helping me stay focused. Another approach that help me keep my focus is going offline. The internet is a huge part of my everyday life because I work online. But going offline on the weekends and on some days when I want to rest helps me keep my focus. I ignore the existence of my laptop as much as I can so I won't get distracted and just focus on my goals. Furthermore, going offline for me means not visiting some of my favorite bloggers, online stores, and social networking accounts. I am easily tempted to go shopping, visit the latest malls and sales, and try the newest restaurant in town that I forget that my goal is to save more money. But doing this allows me to refrain from any distractions and temptations that will prevent me from losing my focus and achieving my goals.
4.)IMAGINE THE BIGGER PICTURE
Envision yourself 5-10 years from now. How do you want to look like? What do you want to be doing? Where would you like to be? Doing this has helped me keep my resolutions. I don't see myself still doing the same job 5-10 years from now. I want to be someone who is financially independent, someone who has traveled the world, and someone who can say she has accomplished her lifelong goal. In short, I want to be a successful person with achievements I can be proud of and achievements that will make me feel fulfilled. Imagining the bigger picture has helped me stay away from any distractions and has helped me keep my focus in achieving my goals. Because I want a better life in the future, I am determined to keep my resolutions today.

  11. These are great tips. I always vaguely set New Years goals (lose weight, save money, etc.) and I never keep them. It's frustrating. :S

  12. AMEN TO THAT!

My new year's resolution this year is just to continue my workout sessions. I've been on a 3month hiatus with my working out 'cos I got too busy with work and all those lame excuses I can think of but since I've already lost a lot of weight last year, I guess I can do it again this year so I'm back. I guess it really matters that you set achievable goals and one step a time lang :)

BTW, love the studs on your top. Have a great week! :)

  13. Can you imagine keeping a resolution is actually the hardest part? Every year, my resolution dies down like way too soon, say, in the very first two days? And now that it's almost the end of January, it almost feels like those resolution issues never actually happen. Reality bites!

    1. Yes, it really is hard to keep a resolution. Therefore, instead of saying resolution, I think it would be best to consider them as goals. This will make them more tangible and achievable. Moreover, goals keep you driven until you can achieve them. :)
