Style Influencer

Fashion has always been a huge part of my life. I remember trying to create clothes for my Barbie collection (trying as the operative word because the patterns I made didn't really manifest due to my poor sewing skills). I also remember trying some of my mom's clothes especially her shoes when she goes out of the house to work. I have always loved fashion and try as I might to resist the urge to purchase new clothes, I just couldn't!

Looking back, my style evolved quite drastically. It may be due to the financial limitations I had before and it could also be because of the people/things that/who influence my style.

Who Influenced my Style?

1.) Barbie - Barbie has played a huge role in my life. I can say that she is probably the very first thing I would consider as a fashion icon. I grew up collecting Barbies and my sister and I used to have a tonne of boxes filled with different Barbies. Her girly, feminine, and colorful outfits has always appealed to me. And since many people thought I looked like a doll when I was younger (I am neither bragging nor proclaiming that I do look like a doll. It's mostly because I have pale complexion that people think I look like a doll. These are not my own words, okay!) I wanted to look like Barbie desperately. I loved wearing flow-y and flower girl-type dresses whenever I can. And until now, I can say that Barbie has really imprinted on my fashion choices and will always be a voice I will hear whenever I go shopping.

2.) My Mom and my Sister - as the youngest girl in my family, I often look up to my mom and my sister for fashion inspiration. My mom has a classic style that i always found to be very womanly and classy. I would try fitting some of her clothes, especially her shoes, when she is out of the house. I think every daughter went through this phase. When I was in High School I would actually borrow some of her clothes whenever we were allowed to wear civilian clothes in school. My entire outfit would compose of everything from my mom's closet. From top to bottom to shoes - everything is from her closet.

My sister was also a huge influence in my style before - that is before she became boho and before I thought she was a tomboy. My sister once had a girly girl style as well. I remember her when I was in Kindergarten and she is in Elementary School, she adored Jessica Rabbit and her super high slit skirts. My sister and I would always wear such skirts even at home and flash our legs to each other. I also remember my sister adoring Darna and would even shout the name whenever she is wearing her pink two-piece swimsuit in the inflatable pool. She also once loved wearing flower girl-type dresses and the color pink. But my sister and I have very different taste in fashion now but she often borrows a lot of my stuff (which I sometimes hate because she doesn't return them to their original position).

3.) Local Celebrities - I don't think there is anyone who was never influenced and inspired by a celebrity when it comes to fashion. I grew up wanting to become a celebrity myself so when I was younger I would always study what they are wearing and how they wear certain clothes. They are the quintessential beauty according to society and little girls are always in awe with them.

4.) Hollywood Celebrities - I only started watching US and UK shows when I entered High School and the internet suddenly became a booming industry. My parents never wanted to avail of cable television so I am stuck with free TV channels here in my country. Since then, I was inspired and influenced by a tonne of Hollywood celebrities who I found to have impeccable styles. Gwen Stefani will forever be a huge influence to me. I am very fond of Japanese fashion and I found Gwen Stefani to embody the Japanese aesthetics really well. Aside from her, I also took notice of Cher in Clueless (like, who was not inspired by her fashion, right?) for her preppy and socialite fashion sense and Paris Hilton simply because I was just addicted to her way back High School. Today, I look up to Emma Roberts and Carey Mulligan. I think their styles are timeless and very feminine; very close to my personal style (I think).

5.) Bloggers - with the advent of the blogging industry, I have also found myself taking inspiration from many bloggers of today. I actually used to go to Lookbook everyday way back 2009 to find some inspiration on what to wear to school that day. That is actually where I first found Tricia Gosingtian who is the very first Filipino blogger I ever followed. As I mentioned, I am addicted to Japanese fashion (everything Japanese actually) and she executes the gyaru style perfectly. Later on, I discovered a lot more local blogs that I really like such as Kryz Uy's, Vern Enciso's, Bestie Konisis' and Dominique Tiu's. I also follow a lot of international bloggers like Alix of The Cherry Blossom Girl, Nicole of Gary Pepper Vintage, Jane of Sea of Shoes, YouTube personality Jenn Im from Clothes Encounters, and Bonnie Barton of Flashes of Style.

6.) Various Websites - since we are already on the topic of the World Wide Web, there are also a lot of websites out there that I found have influenced my style and fashion choices. Aside from Lookbook where all the fashionista's in the world gather, I also enjoy browsing Style Arena. It is a Japanese website (written in Japanese which I totally cannot understand!) that features ordinary Japanese people in their street style. I enjoy seeing the various styles of people living in various districts in Tokyo and how different from each other they all are.

7.) Kpop - I know that my style isn't really close to what you would call as Kpop style but I can say their music has influenced me in some way. Kpop makes me feel youthful and fresh despite my old age (don't ask!). And besides, people could hardly guess that I am already this old so I can still pull off youthful styles such as the one I am wearing in this post! Additionally, Kpop style is all about bright colors which definitely adheres to my style.

There is definitely a lot more that influence my style. From magazines to books to photographs and weather phenomenon - they all affect how I style my clothes and how I dress up. But generally speaking, these are the people and the things that influence me to create my outfits. And I think that I will always be influenced by all of these until I grow old (this is me always assuming things).

Please don't judge me for posting this picture of me revealing a bit of my mid-section. I really like this picture only because the lighting made it seem like I have toned abs when in reality, I don't!
