Initiative - the ability to assess and initiate things independently; the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do (Google, 2014).
Initiative is a trait that I have learned throughout the years. I was taught to decide on things independently. Though sometimes I make bad decisions, I make sure that I learn from them. We can never make the right choices all the time. Sometimes you choose the better option but other times, you you make bad decisions. But even if you choose the latter, having the initiative to decide on things independently I believe is a good trait. It means that you can think quickly and you can take responsibility for your decisions. However, not everyone will agree with me. Some people, they prefer for you not to decide on things on your own. If you are faced with a difficult situation, they prefer if you consult every step with them.
If you work closely with other people and if making decisions on your own can result in a chain reaction, I guess taking the initiative all the time is not a good option. But I still believe that it is better for someone to be making decisions independently than not having a mind of his own. Furthermore, consulting other people about making decisions all the time is a waste of time. What if it is an urgent situation? What if you need to decide on things now and there is no time left to wait for a reply? I would rather be someone who can decide and take responsibility for her actions than someone who can't. It is okay for me to be reprimanded for something I did than not doing anything at all. I would rather take action than sit and wait around for the result. But as they say, you really can't please everyone. Some will like your initiative and some won't. You just have to stand firmly for what you believe in and be responsible for whatever outcome of your decision.
