6 Things I Do to Stay Happy

While happiness may be a vague and intuitive word, it is a feeling that I think we all understand. When we see people smile, we know they are happy. When we hear people laugh, we know they are happy. It may not be eternal happiness but they were happy for a fleeting moment. We understood the emotion behind the action.

I can't say I am the happiest person in the world because as a human, I covet many mundane things. I want more clothes. I want designer makeup, bags, and shoes. I want a huge house and luxury car. Though I know these monetary things can only give me ephemeral happiness, I want them still. I guess it is very human of me to want what the world has to offer. I am able to shop for clothes more often than some people and gain temporary satisfaction/happiness but in the end I am still unhappy. Why? Because I will want more later on. It is a never ending cycle that we, humans, get into. We succumb to monetary temptations and when we finally get it, we end up wanting more; insatiable.

But happiness should not be dependent on such things. There is so much more to this world than luxury brands and a mansion. I still believe that people can be happy even if they don't have money. Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy even if you have nothing or choose to be miserable. Life may be difficult and challenging at times but that shouldn't stop you from living a happy life.

Here are 5 things I do that keep me happy:

  1. Think Positively - yes, I know you've already heard it so many times in your life. But it is the best advice you can get if you want to be happy. You failed your first math exam? Motivate yourself to study harder and pass the next exam. Your boyfriend dumped you? There are billions of people in the world. I am sure you'll find someone better. You lost your job? There are other jobs out there that you can take. As they say, earning money is easy. The challenge is finding a job that you enjoy. So, you hate your job? Go on the internet/newspaper and look for a job you know you'll enjoy. There is always a bright side to every problem. You just have to train yourself to think on the other end of the spectrum when you encounter challenges. Don't let stress and anger cloud your mind.
  2. Breathe - take a deep breath and let go of all ill emotions so you can invite positive energy. Breathing allows oxygen to freely flow in your body allowing you to relax, relieve your body of stress and clear your mind. When you are feeling sad, angry, or depressed, just remember to breathe deeply for 30 seconds before you start thinking.
  3. Find a hobby - when you do something that you really enjoy, you tend to forget all other things; you tend to forget that there is a world other than your hobby. I enjoy blogging and writing and this takes on a different dimension that I forget all my worries. Find something that you are truly passionate about. Do you like writing? Start a blog. Do you like taking pictures? Start a photoblog. Do you like fashion? Start a fashion blog or a fashion business on the side. Do you like drawing? Take art classes. Find what it is that you will really enjoy and do it with passion. So when think things are going wrong for you, just do your hobby and you will be amazed at how happy you will feel afterwards.
  4. Friends - as the saying goes, "no man is an island." We are a group of islands - an archipelago. We need other islands in order to be whole - complete. No one can live in isolation. We need other people to learn and discover many things. You don't need a lot. You just need a few who you know will be there for you when things aren't going so well for you. You only need a few who will be willing to go on a journey with you. When you are feeling sad or lonely, talk to a friend/s. They will help you get through your hurdles and help you become a happier person.
  5. Travel - as the former boss of a friend of mine said "traveling can make you the most intelligent person in the world." True as traveling allows you to become more open to the world. It allows you to discover so many new things. Traveling will also help you think better when you are feeling down or sad. The new environment will help stimulate your mind to let go of what's stressing you. The change in environment will also allow you to think of nothing other than yourself so you can start resolving your issues internally. So travel to gain more knowledge and enable you to think clearly when things aren't going well for you.
  6. Exercise - it is true when they say that physically fit people are the happiest. This is a scientific explanation to happiness. When you exercise, the body releases hormones that combat stress thus making you feel relaxed and overall happier. This balances all the stress that come your way on a daily basis. Allot even just 30 minutes 2-3 times a week for exercising and you'll be surprised at how happier and more relaxed you will feel after.

These are just the things that I do. It may not be applicable to everyone or you may have other things you do but I do hope this was helpful to some people. Just always remember that though you may be experience hardships and challenges, there is always a solution; you can always choose to be happy.

Have a wonderful week!
