Short Post: Sarcasm

I hate sarcastic people.

Sarcasm is a noun that I only selectively use. I do make sarcastic jokes and sarcastic remarks but I only do it with people who know me; people who are close to me. It is very easy to be misunderstood when you say sarcastic jokes or remarks to random people. You can't expect everyone around you to be on the same page. If you don't say what you really mean people won't understand what you are trying to get across. Only people who are aware that you are sarcastic will understand that what you mean is actually the opposite. Otherwise, people will interpret what you say as is.

When I say I hate sarcastic people, these are people who I don't know but talk to me in a sarcastic way. I am sarcastic in some ways but as I said, I only become sarcastic with people who know me. Misunderstanding and misquoting me is something that I really want to avoid as it can impact me negatively. If I want something done, I make sure to articulate it as how I want it to be. I don't try to sound intelligent by being sarcastic as the person on the other end might interpret it differently. If you don't want to be misunderstood, make sure you convey your message accordingly.

How to Deal with a Sarcastic Person
  1. Read the tone of the voice - sometimes it is very easy to detect whether a person is being sarcastic or not simply by the tone of their voice. When a person is being sarcastic they suddenly change the tone of their voice and sometimes they make it louder as well. If you observe that the tone of the person talking to you has suddenly changed, it could be an indicator that he is being sarcastic.
  2. Be civil - I find sarcastic remarks to be insulting sometimes. But even if you feel the other person has insulted, respond in a civil manner. Don't take it too personally. You are a civilised person and you know better than talking back in a disrespectful, uncivilised manner.
  3. Ignore - if the person is someone who you don't know, I think you have the right to ignore him or her. As I mentioned above, sarcasm can easily be misunderstood especially if the person you are talking to is a stranger. If you find the sarcastic remark unpleasant, ignore and walk away. You don't know the person anyway so it doesn't matter and you shouldn't care really if you misunderstood that remark. It's the other party's fault for not clearly conveying what he meant to say.
  4. Play ignorant - pretend you don't know what they are talking about so they are forced to drop the sarcasm and tell you exactly what they want.

  7. I used to be super sarcastic in high school. And ultimately cynical. Now I found that that just EXHAUSTED me. I got so tired of such short jokes. And joke quality is very important to me haha. So now I'm funny without sarcasm simply because people use it too much and just don't use it well. It gets tiring. When do you get to be yourself?

    1. I am the same as you. I am still sarcastic though but I only act like that around people I am really close to - people who know that I am just being sarcastic and won't take what I am saying personally/seriously. It's fun to be sarcastic sometimes but I believe there is an appropriate time, place and audience for it. It does get tiring to be and hear sarcastic people who you don't even know are being sarcastic. It is emotionally and mentally draining!

  17. I think people should just stop using sarcasm every single time just so they can label themselves witty and humorous. It sucks. I don't find it amusing when somebody responds to me in sarcasm - I pretty much get angry and storm away. Haha. I just get really pissed off with these kinds of people easily. I'm trying to curb my tendencies at responding back at them though because I know it's not any better. Still, the world needs a whole lot more of kindness today. People are resorting to saying sarcastic things just because the internet says they're one of the wittiest and smartest people, which is just outright dumb. :)

    1. I agree. Being sarcastic doesn't really make you sound witty or humorous. In reality, sarcastic people actually sound irritating and annoying. I do talk back when people talk to me in sarcasm. I shouldn't but sometimes I can't help it! Haha!

  19. I love your outfit! It really has a vintage vibe with that beautiful skirt and flowered crop top, they are really perfectly matched. :D
As for sarcasm in people, I also only use it with people who know me best because I think it's used much more in the purpose of insulting other people and I find it very distasteful. So yes, I agree with you on the topic. :)
I love your blog and I'm absolutely following you from now. Feel free to stop by mine whenever you want, you're always welcome! :*
