Spend vs Save: Benefit's The Porefessional Primer and Maybelline's Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer

The size of my pores is one of my biggest insecurities. I have had oily skin ever since I can remember and have had acne since I was in 5th grade (which are said to be the cause of huge and open pores). I rarely breakout these days (all thanks to my dermatologist) but the size of my pores remained the same; it is as huge as the moon’s craters.

I have always envied how gorgeous Korean skin looks and I have always wished mine looked like theirs. It might take a number laser session before my skin will start to look like that (or probably never) and a huge amount of money. I don’t have the patience and I don’t have the funds. So you can just imagine the delight I felt when brands suddenly started producing pore minimizing products. From serums, to moisturizers, to masks and even makeup primers – I have tried many of them. The first three I don’t think were effective on my skin. I have used The Face Shop, Etude House and Innisfree but none of them managed to shrink my pores. The easiest and most effective I find are makeup primers because they “erase” your pores in an instant. Say goodbye to large pores and hello to beautiful pore-less skin.

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer
If you are working on a tight budget, Maybelline introduced the Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer a while ago. I don’t think I have seen this here in Manila as mine was gifted by my aunt who lives in the US. It retails for $6.99 in Maybelline’s website but could differ depending on the store (or state due to tax) where you’ll purchase.

Maybelline has always been one of the top drugstore brands so you can expect that you’ll get great results with the Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer. I am quite happy with it and loved the texture/finish of the product on my skin. But as they say, you get what you pay for. It is affordable but my pores look almost the same after application. I was expecting it to be invisible (or even just less visible) but it’s almost as if I did not put anything on my face – that is if I use it on its own. But when used under BB cream the effect is actually quite nice. You can hardly tell I have huge pores. It was able to blend in smoothly with the BB cream I used and I like the final effect.

  • Pros:
    • Affordable
    • Matte finish
    • Powdery and light texture
    • Transparent (so it blends well with any shade of BB/CC cream or foundation)
    • Small amount goes a long way
    • Comes in a hygienic packaging (product is squeezed out so you don’t have to keep on dipping your fingers or apply the product directly to your face)
    • Blends well with any skin tone because of transparent color
  • Cons:
    • Does not really erase your pores when worn on its own
    • Does not have SPF so you really need to apply something on top of it
Overall:
I do think this is a nice product but just as a primer and not to be applied on its own. It also has a matte finish and powdery texture which are two qualities I really look for in face products. However, it doesn’t have SPF (which I really wish it has) so you need to apply sunscreen or BB/CC cream on top to protect your skin.

The Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer is a good product to use under your makeup. It is available for about $6.99 in most drugstores and department stores worldwide.

Benefit The Porefessional Face Primer
If you are willing to spend money on a product you know will work then the Benefit The Porefessional Face Primer is a good choice. If you haven’t heard of this product yet, then you must be living in Mars or something. This has become a cult favourite among beauty enthusiasts and makeup artists. It has been in the list of must-have makeup items in every website and magazine article. It is sold at an expensive price of $31 but the quality is definitely value for your money.

Benefit is one of the leading mid to high-price makeup items and many of its products are cult favourites. I haven’t tried many Benefit products before and this is actually one of the first products I have tried from the brand and I must say I am impressed. It doesn’t make my pores invisible but it looks less visible compared to the Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer. It is very sheer despite the fact that it looks like a foundation (I really thought there would be some coverage). Nonetheless, if money is not an issue I would prefer the Benefit The Porefessional Face Primer over the Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Primer any time

  • Pros:
    • Pores are less visible
    • Can be worn on its own (no need to put BB/CC cream or sunscreen on top to protect skin)
    • Has a watery texture making it easy to apply and blend
    • Dewy effect for a healthy looking finish
    • Small amount goes a long way
    • Comes in a hygienic packaging (product is squeezed out so you don’t have to keep on dipping your fingers or apply the product directly to your face)
    • Blends well with any skin tone
  • Cons:
    • Expensive
    • Also doesn’t have SPF
Overall:
The Benefit The Porefessional Face Primer is a really good product; no wonder many people have made this a staple in their everyday makeup routine. It is a product that works. You still get to see your pores but hardly visible.
