Spend vs Save: Urban Decay Primer Potion and Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer

I rarely wear eyeshadows on a normal day but during special occasions such as weddings and birthday parties I always make sure to wear some. Even just a light dusting of a nice pinkish iridescent finish eyeshadow can already add glam and life to one's eyes fit for the occasion. And whenever I wear eyeshadows I make it a point to wear a primer underneath it to extend the longevity of the eyes makeup and also to intensify the color.

There are so many eye primers to choose from these days and some of the more popular ones are the Urban Decay Primer Potion, Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Benefit Don't Stray Eyeshadow Primer and Mac Prep + Prime. On the Asian beauty world, Etude House's Proof 10 Eye Primer is one of the most popular. I haven't tried as many because as I said, I rarely wear eyeshadow. But I have managed to try 2: Urban Decay Primer Potion and Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer. Former is on the expensive side ($20US in Sephora's website) and the latter is on the affordable side (298.00PHP about $7US).

Urban Decay Primer Potion
This is probably one of the most popular eyeshadow primer and I can see why. The brand alone is already something that can guarantee quality. This eye primer is not available in the Philippines officially but there are plenty of online sellers you can find (not even Sephora Philippines carry the brand). I got mine from my aunt who resides in the US.
  • Product Description (from Urban Decay's website):
    • Our # 1 best-selling product in a NEW easy-to-squeeze tube! Apply before your eyeshadow for more vibrant CREASE-FREE color that lasts for 24 hours. This is it – THE most legendary primer in the beauty industry. Eyeshadow Primer Potion is coveted by makeup artists and makeup junkies alike because it guarantees more vibrant eyeshadow that lasts for 24 hours and NEVER CREASES! Once you experience its powers (plus how smoothly it glides on – an added bonus) you'll never want to live without it. Original formula dries down invisibly, while Eden, Sin and Greed are shades that can also be worn as shadows or highlighters!
  • Things to Love:
    • can make eyeshadows last
    • prevents creasing of the eyeshadow
    • intensifies the color
    • easy application
    • blendable
    • a little is all you need to cover the entire eye area
    • prevents oily eyelids
    • new packaging (tube type) is more hygienic and allows you to squeeze all the product up to the last drop
    • matches any skin tone
  • Things to Hate:
    • Expensive at $20US per full size bottle (11ml)
    • Not officially available in the Philippines (online stores are not guaranteed to sell authentic items)
    • Original packaging may be a little unhygienic because the applicator touches your skin directly
  • Overall Verdict:
    • I give this product a 5/5. If it isn't for the price I would keep on repurchasing the Urban Decay Primer Potion. All the hype about this product is true. I love how it intensified and darkened the color of the eyeshadow.

Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer
Because I am always broke and I am a huge fan of K-beauty, Etude House has always been my go-to store for anything beauty related. I was in search for an affordable eye primer because the DIY eye primer I made just wasn't doing it. I am not prepared to spend thousands of pesos for a Western brand-name one so I decided to settle for the Proof 10 Eye Primer from Etude House. This is definitely a great alternative if you don't want to spend too much but want a quality eye primer.
  • Product Description (from Etude House's website:
    • Proof 10 Eye Primer supplies coverage to eyelids and around the eyes to enhance eye shadow color and intergrity for a longer lasting, Perfect 10 look.
    • Directions: Use fingers to gently apply primer to upper and lower eyelids prior to eye shadow application. Also applicable to eye lines prior to eyeliner application.
  • Things to Love:
    • affordable
    • easily available in the Philippines
    • Etude House has branches all over the country to guarantee authenticity
    • make eyeshadows last a long time
    • prevents creasing of eye makeup
    • intensified the color of the eyeshadow
    • blends well to any skin tone
    • easy application
    • consistency is easy to blend and spread throughout the eye area
    • nice, light scent
    • prevents oily eyelids
  • Things to Hate
    • unhygienic packaging (I don't like the idea that I have to keep on putting the applicator back inside the bottle after applying on my skin)
  • Overall Verdict:
    • I give this eye primer a 5/5. I love this eyeshadow primer so much! It made my eyeshadow last a long time and it didn't even crease. For only 298.00PHP, you get quality eye primer.

Urban Decay Primer Potion or Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer?
Because I am a cheapskate and because I am always broke, I would definitely choose Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer. I get pretty much the same effect and quality for a fraction of the cost. The only difference I noticed is the shade the eyeshadow became on both eye primers. The Urban Decay one is on he intense dark side and the Etude House one is more on the intense iridescent side. I actually prefer the latter effect which is why I prefer it over the Urban Decay one. But if you are willing to spend a bit more for a darker and intense color pay off for eyeshadows, definitely opt for Urban Decay Primer Potion.

  1. I use ELF before but I feel like I need a new good and inexpensive eye primer. Will try out Etude House then. Urban Decay is expensive nga. I'm glad that there are cheaper and good alternatives. :)
