Mt. Fuji, Japan (Ensoleille Excursion Ship and Kachi-Kachi Ropeway)

There are three ways on how you can get the best view of Mt Fuji: 1.) Ensoleille Excursion Cruise; 2.) Kachi Kachi Ropeway; and, 3.) through the Shinkansen. We did all but fail to see the beauty of Mt Fuji. We were disappointed. Nonetheless, this Japan trip was fun and tiring (as usual) and I got to experience new things.

Ensoleille Excursion Cruise
After visiting Kawaguchiko Herb Hall we decided to try the cruise first before the cable car to the Mt Fuji view deck. There is a combo ticket you can purchase at the dock. For 1,300¥ per person you get a ticket to the excursion cruise as well as a roundtrip ticket to the cable car (ticket to Ensoleille is 930¥ and the cable car is 720¥ roundtrip per person). You save 350¥ for the combo ticket. The cruise around Lake Kawaguchi is approx. 20 minutes and you are requested to be at the dock at least 10 minutes before departure time (departs every 30 minutes). I don’t remember if there was a narration throughout the tour because I was definitely not listening and just wanted to enjoy the view. There is a roof deck for people who want to see the view in all directions. There is a covered windowless area at the back where we decided to sit so we at least have cover from the sun but at the same time be able to see the view outside. For those who wish to enjoy the cruise in an air-conditioned area, there is a section at the bottom of the boat where you can sit comfortably and coolly.

I didn’t think this cruise was necessary because Mt Fuji cannot be seen anyway. I think it would have been worth it had Mt Fuji decided to show itself. But on a cloudy day this part of the trip is unnecessary. You just basically tour the lake and see the lush green mountains on the side. That’s it! Not much to see really. If it is cloudy on the day of your trip, skip this. But on a clear day and Mt Fuji is visible, it would be wonderful.

Kachi Kachi Ropeway
After the cruise you can just cross the street and walk to your left for some 20 seconds, climb a flight of stairs and board the cable car to the Mt Fuji view deck. You can choose to do a roundtrip cable car ride or a one way up and walk a trail going down. We chose to do the roundtrip cable car ride because we are not in proper hiking clothes and because we want to manage our time. There is a garden you will pass by if you do the trail which I would have loved to see but I am more concerned about the time so we didn’t do the trail. We spent just about 20 minutes at the view deck because there is not much to see. But on a clear day it would have been lovely to see Mt Fuji from the top. The view below is also something so it was still worth the trip.

The view deck is decorated with cute rabbit and racoon cartoon characters. The characters came from a popular Japanese folk story in which the rabbit takes revenge on the racoon by setting the latter on fire and drowning in the river. The story sounds grotesque but when you see the characters on the view deck they actually look adorable and cute. They don’t look like they want to kill each other at all.

Personally, I would recommend the ropeway but not the cruise on a cloudy day. The cruise would only be worthwhile had Mt Fuji blessed us with its beauty in the background. But the view deck was worth visiting even without seeing Mt Fuji. The view below is breathtaking which compensates for the lack of Mt Fuji. Just something to note: the queue at the cable car can become very long at certain times so be sure to manage your time.

  21. That is exactly what I thought too! It looks scary because of the height but you actually get a nice feeling when you are already up there.
