L is for Learning

Whenever I tell people that I don't know how to ride the bike they are always surprised. They would be like "what were you doing when you were a child?" And then I started to ponder. What was I doing during my youth? Did I waste away my life and did nothing? Was I too diffierent from other kids that how I spent my youth was something they could not imagine? I really don't know. And then I told myself, it is never too late to learn new things. I may be 28 years old now but that does not mean I cannot learn how to ride the bike. And I did.

Because I don't believe education should be costly, I requested my boyfriend to teach me instead (and because I have no idea if there is even a professional school to learn how to ride the bike). My sister has a bike so I just borrowed that. It took me over an hour to feel comfortable and find my balance. But I was still having difficulty adjusting to the brakes. And so I fell. I had two huge wounds on both knees and some bruises as well. It hurt like hell! But that incident made me realise that learning something new is not that easy. It can hurt most of the time. But at the same time it can be fun and fulfilling. On our next session, I wore knee pads, practiced for more than 2 hours, learned how to make turns, practiced going downhill and uphill, and sweat a lot! It was more intense than the first one but I was determined (and because I was enjoying it). I am still a bit scared sometimes especially when I am already too tired and couldn't find my balance. But the feeling of learning something new and actually enjoying it make me feel fulfilled.

I look forward to weekends not just because I can rest and get away from work but also because I can get on that bike and ride around our village. It is a fun experience!

Moral of the story: it is never too late to learn anything. As long as it makes you happy and as long as you are determined to learn, you can. Age is just a number, as they say. Everyday is a new day and we always have time to learn something new.

When I am confident with my biking skills, I will probably move on to driving (scary!).

  2. I agree it's never too late how to learn things, actually it's probably harder to get to grips with things like riding a bike the older you are so you've done a great job! Love this outfit btw, super cute x

  10. Your little pink bag is so cute with the blue dress! Congratulations on learning to ride a bike too! I rode my bike a lot when I was younger. We are trying to buy a new house near some parks so my boys can do the same. They say it's harder to learn things as we get older, so it's a great achievement for you :)

    Hope you're having a great week :)

  11. Jenn, I love this post. This is next on my mother's bucket list. My mother never learned to ride a bicycle. Even as a child, she never joined us. But now she is determined to Learn. I will have the knee and elbow pad along with the helmet on hand for her. Thanks for sharing!

  18. Really? Good on you! Boyfriends are the best teachers. haha!

  19. Thank you! Yes, it is stressful because you feel pressured. I mean, I am already an adult and learning how to ride the bike at this age can be embarrassing for some people. But if you are really determined, you won't care what other people think. As long as you are learning, that is all that matters.

  20. hahaha! No! Of course not! I was wearing shorts and rubber shoes the first time then leggings and rubber shoes all the other times I practiced. Maybe when I am confident with my biking skills I will be able to wear skirts/dress and flats/wedges. But as a noob, no. I will stick with rubber shoes and leggings.

  21. Yes. You can always learn something new no matter how old you are.

  22. Thank you! Followed back.

  23. Really? I'm sure she'll do great! Yes, protective gear is very important for a beginner. It is scary and falling can cause injuries. That is actually what I did wrong when I first started learning. I should have worn knee pads and helmet. Fingerless gloves are also helpful because the bike handles can be hard on the skin.

  24. Thank you! I rode the bike when I was younger too. But bikes that have 4 wheels. haha! I was too scared to try the bike with 2 wheels when I was young. I thought I will never learn how to ride the bike and will never want to. But now that I did, I feel accomplished.

  25. Really? Well, it is not too late to learn! You should because it is an amazing feeling riding a bike.

  26. Thank you! Yes. And learning new things help keep the brain cells active thereby decreasing the chance of having alzheimer's.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I hope so! I really want to be able to ride the bike without worrying that I will fall.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Really? I guess there really are a lot of people who don't know how to ride the bike. You should try learning too!

  29. Thank you! This pinafore is a favorite of mine.

  30. It is! Because as you grow older you have more reservations about learning new things than when you were younger. And you have lots of other priorities as well so your mind can be divided. But, if you really want to achieve something, it is never too late. Age is just a number.

  31. Thank you! I do feel accomplished that at this age I was able to learn how to ride the bike.
