Product Review: Althea Korea Petal Velvet Powder

Oily skin is my major skin concern. No matter the weather, my skin produces so much sebum uncontrollably. Thus, a good powder is necessary in my daily makeup routine. Even with matte BB cream or foundation I still need a good translucent powder to set my makeup and make it last longer. So far, of all the powders I have tried, the Banila Co Prime Primer powder is the best. It doesn't control oil for the entire day but a lot longer than most of the powders I tried (like 5-6 hours). However, this powder is quite expensive and I don't always have the budget for it so I am still in search for a good, more affordable alternative. The Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder comes close. But Innisfree is not available in the Philippines (unless I shop online). Because I am still searching far and wide for a good alternative, I was ecstatic when Althea Korea mentioned they are launching their very first product which happens to be a powder. I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to be among the first to try this product as this is exactly what I have been looking for. The Althea Petal Velvet Powder was just released this month and it might just be my new favorite powder.

First of all, I am in-love with the fresh and simple packaging. I love the pastel pink box and lid that goes so well with the snowy white color of the powder. Second, I love the scent. In case you don't know yet, I am a sucker for anything floral scented. My perfumes are all floral scent. And third, I love how the container is filled with product to the brim. I spilled a few when I removed the sticker that covers the holes.

I've been using the Althea Petal Velvet Powder for a week now and here are my honest thoughts:
  • Pros:
    • very affordable (sold for only 210.00PHP)
    • cute packaging
    • fast delivery
    • smells nice
    • creates a velvety smooth texture when applied
    • translucent (I don't like coverage because they cause my makeup to cake. Translucent powders don't)
    • ultra soft powder puff (feels so luxurious)
    • pore blurring (surprisingly my pores aren't as visible as they normally are. You can still see them but only when you look at them up close. Normally my pores are visible even at a safe distance)
    • smooth looking complexion
    • the product was not tested on animals (cruelty free is always a plus!)
    • made of natural ingredients
    • I am not allergic to any of the ingredients (no breakouts or redness)
  • Cons:
    • only available online
    • it did not control the sebum production of my skin (it didn't last long enough until my skin started producing so much oil again)
Overall thoughts:
Though I was a bit disappointed that it did not do what I had wanted it to do (which is to control oil) I am still happy with this product and will be re-purchasing (I am not kidding. I do love it that I will re-purchase when I am done with this container). I love how it made my pores less visible and the smooth velvety texture. I can't get enough touching my face when I used this! The Althea Petal Velvet Powder may be the ideal powder for people who don't have super oily skin like me or for people who want their pores to become less visible.

  4. I like Althea Petal Velvet Powder! Although it does not have sebum control unlike my go-to Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Powder, I love that Althea do not crease. It makes my skin look so smooth :)

  7. Looks like a great brand - pity it didn't help much for oil control.

  9. Yeah. I really like this powder! I will probably just use this with Urban Decay de-slick setting spray to help keep my face matte for a longer period of time.

  12. Agree! Innisfree is such a great product but nothing tops Banila Co Prime Primer powder for me. But in terms of making my skin look smooth and soft, this one from Althea definitely rivals.

  15. This is great if you are looking for a product to make your skin appear smooth but for oil control, I prefer another product.
